Often, no instruction is better than bad instruction.
Not all instructors, even those with college or professional baseball experience, truly understand the nuances of an elite swing or pitching motion. Even fewer know how to teach these skills effectively.
My Journey
I started teaching right out of college in 1992. After a year of giving lessons and running camps, I had the opportunity to play professional baseball from 1993 to 1997. Throughout my career, I was a diligent student of the game, experiencing the highs and lows of hitting—failing often, but succeeding around 30% of the time. I was fortunate enough to achieve a career batting average just shy of .300, which is quite rare in professional baseball.
However, let me be clear: I DID NOT know how to teach hitting back then. Through continued private lessons, I learned that what I felt and what was actually happening in a swing were often different. I also discovered the hard way that overloading kids with instructions could confuse them more than help.
Building Centerfield Baseball Academy
In 2003, I founded Centerfield Baseball Academy and began teaching full-time, dedicating over 30 hours a week to coaching. Malcolm Gladwell, in his book "Outliers," mentions that dedicating 30 hours a week for 10 years to any skill can lead to mastery. This is when I truly honed my craft.
I was fortunate to learn from coaches like Brent Strom, a seasoned coach with 40 years of experience. He taught me that while many instructors in the US focus on static positions, the key to excellence lies in understanding the dynamic movements between those positions.
Our Approach
Through extensive video analysis and trial and error, I developed a method of teaching from the inside out rather than the outside in. Many instructors unknowingly coach the natural athleticism out of players. our trained instructors know how to avoid these unfortunate side effects of bad instruction. As a young player, I excelled at hitting because my coaches allowed me to play freely. However, as a pitcher, I was restricted by instructions to maintain balance and arm positioning, which ultimately led to a decline in my performance and injury.
At Centerfield Baseball Academy, our focus is on young athletes who are eager to improve and become more powerful. We teach goal-oriented, dynamic movement tailored to each individual's needs and aspirations.
